Wednesday September 30, 2015

Agenda:
2.  create a molecule
3.  differentiate between atoms and molecules

Objective:  I will create a virtual molecule to have a better understanding of the connection between atoms and molecules.

Purpose:  All matter in the universe is made up of atoms, and atoms combine chemically to make molecules.

POD:  Based on yesterday's short video, what are the three things you should remember about the atom:
1.
2.
3.

Overview:  We've spend a few weeks talking about atoms and molecules.  Briefly looked at the periodic table and highlighted atomic number, chemical name, chemical symbol, atomic mass number.  Today you will learn the information provided by periods and groups.  Take notes on this!

Using the periodic table, identify how many protons, neutrons, and electrons the following atoms have H, Be, N, O, F, He, then diagram a Bohr-Rutheford model and Lewis dot model.

If you don't finish in class, then finish for homework.

Tuesday September 29, 2015

Objective:  Today we will examine the difference between atoms and molecules.

Purpose:  To understand that all matter in the universe is made up of atoms, and atoms combine chemically to make molecules.

POD  Take out your Molecules and Compounds Worksheet and determine the difference between molecules of: Sugar, Vitamin C, Aspirin, Advil, and Peppermint.

What is the difference between mass and weight?

Agenda:

1.  Collect POD from last week.
2.  Discuss computer lab issues and quiz results
4.  Atoms to molecules

  • use the periodic table to diagram elements from Group 1, 2, 15, 16, 17, 18
    • place the correct number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in your drawing
    • you have notes on how to calculate the number of protons, use them.

Welcome back to the Computer Lab-- Monday September 28, 2015

Our goal today is to have 100% of students log onto the computer via their own log ins.  Each one of you did a great job on Friday, especially those of you who were helpful in setting others up.  If you did not log in with your access code, you must come see me.  I have new log in information for you.

Today, please continue to practice the main ideas for unit 1 on matter.

I will be guiding you through the Socrative App to review.  You will be placed in groups digitally.  The groups will race for the win.  Please read each question carefully, do your best in preparation for the final unit assessment.

Once you have reviewed several times, I will instruct you on where to go next.
  1. Review unit 1 main concepts   You will need my Class CODE to access the review questions.  I will provide that for you.  Once you have signed on, WAIT for instructions.

Please go to this site www.ck12.com to review main concepts on matter.  Click here for the next standard.  There are lots of resources to hep you review.

If everyone logs in successfully, then our next lesson should be smooth sailing.

Please remember to stay on task.  Everything that you do once you log in is accessible and you can get in trouble for not following expectations.

Welcome to the Computer Lab and Happy Friday :)

Objective for today:  We will review for, and then take unit one quiz on matter.

Agenda:

  1. Review unit 1 main concepts   You will need my Class CODE to access the review questions.  I will provide that for you.  Once you have signed on, WAIT for instructions.
  2. After our review, you will remain on the above site for a quiz.  If you have any questions, this is the time to ask.  YES this counts for your grade (qizzes and tests are 50% of your grade).
  3. If time permits, spend some time on this site to interact with the periodic table of elements  Explore this site and take notes on at least 3 elements that are interesting to you.  Be prepared to share with the class.  Focus on who discovered it, what is it used for, how expensive is it, etc.
